Nutmeg

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT NUTMEG

ORIGIN

Nutmeg, scientific name Myristica Fragrans, belongs to the Myristicaceae family. Originally, this spice was found only in the Banda islands, in the Maluku archipelago in India, and was therefore very rare.

The Europeans started getting nutmeg directly from the producer islands and selling it in Europe in the 16th century. Thanks to their presence in India, where they had a base, the Portuguese, quickly overtaken by the Dutch, became the main sellers of nutmeg in Europe and helped make this spice more widely available on the continent. In the following years, nutmeg was exported and grown in many countries all over the world.
