ORIGIN

Pimenta originates from the West Indies and South America. It was discovered by Christopher Columbus.

The French also refer to this berry as ‘four spice’, because it encapsulates the flavours of four spices: cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and pepper. Hence its English name, ‘allspice’.

CULTIVATION METHOD

Its scientific name is Pimenta Officinalis. So it makes more sense to call it Jamaican pimenta than Jamaican pepper.
